Sound Bites and Wedding Dresses
Do you remember the sound bite that was popular a few years ago? Some people heard "Laurel" others heard "yanny." It was super annoying and I was upset at myself for falling for the hype and listening to it. It did indeed, boggle my mind. I clearly heard the one sound and my son clearly heard it another way. Which is crazy, given that Laurel and Yanny are two completely distinct sounds.
When things like this happen, where many of us are lured in and take a part of "fad hype" I often wonder, "why did this come?" Like the wedding dress that was popular for raising the question "is it gold, or is it blue?" while back. SAME THING! People squabbled over the "fact" that it is "white" and others were upset because CLEARLY it was "blue!" We could, of course, argue that different screens give off different colors and all that technical stuff, or we could look at the bigger picture.
What if the reason we were given those two small, yet popular experiences was to give us- not ANOTHER way to disagree...but a way to look at the fact that "my reality says this is true and factual" and clearly "your reality says this is true and factual." that instead of looking at it like a difference and reason for war, we were to open our eyes to the possibility that it is possible for two people to be both wrong and right at the exact same time.
When they hype of the sound bite calmed down I sat back and thought "wow, we really missed the boat on that one." Even our president and his daughter partook in the fun of publicizing what they heard and that those who heard different were "wrong."
Perhaps we were trying to be shown that "hey, instead of arguing and dividing, let's look at what's really going on here. My reality is good and right and true. And so is that of my brother."
Pay attention to that next time something comes up. Ask yourself, "why did this come to me?" If the result is squabbling, it's probably another opportunity for us to practice understanding, listening and communal compassion. Not another reason to choose war.
